It's pretty good for a first try. Not too sure if the minimalistic style was intentional, but it is appealing.
However, you should look into working out the clipping that going on in the scarf/bandanna portion and the character's midsection. If you modeled in pieces it tends to look worse than a solidly modeled character.
The shading would benefit from keeping away from black and going with something with transparency or going with minimal shading (in favor of a vector look).
In addition, the torch would've looked better as a 3d model in this case, but it's not impossible to make particles in a 3d modeller look great especially with the minimal style.
